Morton's Neuroma

What is Morton's Neuroma?

Morton's Neuroma is a painful foot condition that affects the nerves between the third and fourth toes. It is characterized by a thickening of the nerve tissue in the ball of the foot, which causes discomfort and pain.

Symptoms of Morton's Neuroma

The most common symptom of Morton's Neuroma is pain in the ball of the foot that is often described as a burning or tingling sensation. The pain can also radiate to the toes or the rest of the foot. Some patients may also experience numbness or a feeling of something being stuck in their shoe.

Causes of Morton's Neuroma

Morton's Neuroma is usually caused by repetitive pressure or irritation on the foot's nerves. The following factors can increase the risk of developing this condition:

â–º Wearing high heels or shoes with narrow toe boxes

â–º Participating in activities that put pressure on the ball of the foot

â–º Having flat feet, high arches, or other foot deformities

â–º Previous foot injuries or surgery

Care for Morton's Neuroma

â–º Rest and Avoid Stress: During the acute phase of metatarsalgia, it is important to rest and avoid stress on the affected foot. Try to avoid activities that may aggravate the pain.

â–º Cold therapy: Applying ice or a cold pack to the affected area can help reduce pain and inflammation. Place a towel between your skin and the ice pack to avoid damaging the skin.

â–º Stretching and Exercises: Stretching exercises can help to relieve tension and pressure on the ball of the foot. Exercises that strengthen the foot muscles can also help to reduce pain and prevent future injuries.

â–º Insoles and Arch Supports: Custom insoles can help to redistribute pressure on the foot and reduce pain. Learn more about FootBalance custom insoles here.

â–º Proper Footwear: Wearing suitable shoes for your specific foot type can help to reduce pressure on the ball of the foot, shoes with a wide toe box and low heels to reduce pressure on the affected area.
